Memorial

As a matter of not imposing on family and friends to make the trip to Las Vegas for Mams/Tante Pop/Oma's memorial service, we thought that all of us will be, at the same time, at every body's own place, reading a "memorial reading" which Melissa graciously agreed to compose for us. Tentatively I like to have the memorial service in Las Vegas at local time 12:00 in the afternoon on Monday, February 9, 2009. I think that this comes out as 9 am in Hawaii, 12pm in California, 2pm in Texas, 3 pm in Florida, 9 pm in Holland, 5 pm in Suriname and 7 pm Tuesday in Australia.

Thoughts of Moeder...

She loves her family and always enjoyed the "get togethers" during the holidays. She prefers to party either at home or at the homes of family and close friends. This way she does not have to meet new people. This, uneasiness in meeting new people, might be the result of spending most of her life in the jungles of Sumatra and Java where her husband was employed as an hydro-electric engineer at any of the many hydro-electric installations located at the rivers deep in the jungles of these islands.

2001 treating us to SUSIE's

Her favorite restaurant was Susie where she can have her "nassi rames" & "lontong compleet". Sees' milk chocolates with a mocha filling and the Danish cookies are frequently her choice of dinner substitutes. With the exception when Folly and Thea surprises her with special goodies from "Susie's" and the "Hollandse Bakker" such as: kwee lapis, crocket, spek koek, home made soesjes, mocha taart, etc. She also cherished Leen's extra effort to visit and do her hair.

She enjoyed card games and played them till the wee hours of the day with family, who stayed with us for a weekend or vacation. She has her favorites among the players and doesn't mind to cheat to make them win (by accidentally dropping cards to the floor and not picking them up or by just passing them under the table). The card games were UNO and Chinese Bridge. She enjoyed playing the slot-machines, and she doesn't like you to be too close to her because, that prevents her from winning.

She is a very generous person, and will give the store away just for the pleasure of giving. Yes, many a family member or close friend can attest to that. Even when you try to refuse it, she has a way of convincing you that you owe her a great favor by accepting it.

She does not believe in doctors. They are the cause of you getting sick and their prescriptions made you more sick. Hard to argue when she lived to be over 100 years, with a mind sharp as a tack, with a near perfect hearing and enough strength to push her walker all around the house.

Although being ill at ease with strangers, Moeder loved to travel. She was always ready to join us wherever we go by car, van or motor-home. She only needed 24 hours notice to pack her weekend bag and instructions to stop by at Bank of America to withdraw some spending money (in particular when one of our destinations included Lake Tahoe or Reno or Laughlin or Primm or .....Las Vegas).

Several trips were made with family vacationers to the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Sequoia and Zion National Parks and Lake Tahoe, to just name a few places. All traveled from early spring, to mid summer sizzle, to fall and depth of winter bitter cold. At no time was she complaining, even when we camped in the motorhome (we had to make sure though that no bears, snakes or animals with glasses -raccoons- were in the area).
Yes, yes she was a traveler.
